Repairs and Restorations

All repairs are performed utilizing the same excellent craftsmanship, quality and pride that goes into my custom work. After all, the end result is a reflection on this studio and my abilities as a skilled artisan. I ask my customers to understand this when bringing work to me for repairs. I will only accept work that will allow me to do a complete and thorough job of bringing the piece back to its original glory.

Detail shows how lead was aging.
The process of removing the exterior glazing putty is messy work and takes lots of patience.... one wrong move and the glass could get broken..... all that work just to find out where the original artist hid the fastening nails. Once those are removed and the paint seal is broken, the panel can be removed from the old frame.

These windows (there are four of them) are approximately 70 years old and are to be installed into the transom of a new home.

Matching glass, especially older glass, takes time. Though I may be unable to match certain glass types, textures and colors exactly, I will try to come as close as possible. I do maintain a large selection of glass samples, giving us the best chance of finding a close match. Also, some additional pieces immediately surrounding the broken piece may need to be replaced to allow the repair to blend in as inconspicuously as possible.

Following are a few reasons why many stained glass artists are unwilling to accept repairs....and why any repairs accepted are entirely at the risk of the client:

  • First of all, it is hard, physically demanding work. The panel must be very carefully removed from the door or window sash (see "Work in Progress" photos above). Please talk with me before attempting to do any of this yourself. It is not an undertaking for anyone without experience in this type of work. Trust me on this one. If done incorrectly, further damage to the glass can and will occur, resulting in a more expensive repair.

  • The time required for a repair depends largely on the extent of the damage and its location within the panel. If a repair is in the middle of a piece, just getting to the damaged area may mean dismantling and rebuilding up to half of the panel. Poor craftsmanship in the original work can make a repair more difficult to rebuild.

  • Sometimes unplanned things happen....maybe the foil around the repair will start coming loose...or some additional lead "came" disintegrates and must be replaced....or (Heaven forbid!) I break another piece of glass trying to get to the area in need of repair. You get the picture. It is rather like opening a can of worms.
